Diversity & Differences

Diversity & Difference

Maggie Dilloway, Chair of the Training Sub-Group, has undertaken two pieces of research on behalf of the project. The current work builds upon the compilation research project and publication already produced by Maggie for Agender in 2006.

Diversity and Difference’ is a research project which targets minority and ethnic women living in the Birmingham and Solihull area. It focuses upon the return to the workforce of this group and specifically those in non gender traditional vocations.  It looks to identify the additional barriers and issues faced by these groups so that recommendations for overcoming the barriers can be structured and implemented.

The project identified a cross section of female participants who would be able to offer diverse opinions and who have come from various backgrounds with very different lived experiences. Twenty women have volunteered as case studies for this research project and have discussed their educational backgrounds, family and cultural expectations and attitudes to employment. They have talked about their hopes and aspirations, both for themselves and for their daughters and granddaughters.

The ‘Research into women currently working in traditional male vocations’ project aimed to develop narrative case studies of women who already undertake work in traditional male occupations as well as including discussions with their employers. It aims to support the curriculum development of centres that are currently identified to offer support to women and girls by identifying best practice in women’s employment in non gender traditional work and also barriers to successful retention of such employment.

Thirty women were interviewed for this project, all of whom are employed in non-traditional work of various kinds. They were asked to consider their education and guidance, particularly careers advice, and the reality of their working lives. The outcome was to identify the experiences of these women and to identify how they came to work in the non traditional vocations that they have chosen and any barriers that they have identified and overcome.   You will be able to download the completed research soon.
